In shortSix Xochimilco tour options sit on this page, from a 2-hour boat that starts at the dock to a 9-hour day that pairs Coyoacan and the Frida Kahlo Museum with the canals. The 9-hour tour, from $40 with a professional certified guide in English or Spanish, is the broadest day and the lowest entry price; the 6-7 hour premium small group, from $56, caps the van at 15 travellers and includes hotel pick-up and drop-off. What a Xochimilco tour includes

Five of the six tours on this page put you on the same boat (the sixth is a kayak trip): a flat-bottomed trajinera, the painted gondola-like boat that is poled through the canals past chinampas, the farming plots that are the reason the area carries UNESCO World Heritage status. The ride itself looks much alike from one departure to the next. What changes is the length of the day, how you get south, and what is handed to you on board.

Length is the first fork. The two drinks-led boats run 2 hours and 2.5 hours and begin at the landing, with your own way to the meeting point. The Coyoacan and Frida Kahlo days run 6-7 hours and 9 hours: the premium small group starts on the canals, while the 9-hour day reaches them after the museum and the streets of Coyoacan. The small-group canal tour lists 1-4 hours: one of those hours is in the trajinera, and 2 to 3 are transit to and from the south of the city.

Food and drink separate these tours more than the itineraries do. Unlimited beer, tequila, mezcal and a small tasting of pulque come with the guacamole party, alongside the ingredients you mash yourself and sliced fruit. The 18+ boat serves crispy tacos with micheladas and margaritas. The premium small group gives you a churro in Coyoacan and a mariachi song on the water, and the kayak morning adds breakfast of coffee, fruit, bread and a main course when you select that option.

Transport is the other thing to check before you pick. Hotel pick-up and drop-off in private transportation comes with the premium small-group tour; the 9-hour day and the small-group canal tour collect you from central meeting points; the kayak trip offers an air-conditioned vehicle as an option. On the two party boats, getting to the dock is on you, so plan the ride-hail in both directions.

Music on board follows the operator's equipment. The premium tour lists a music speaker on the trajinera and one mariachi song, the guacamole party brings its own speaker, and on the 18+ boat you can connect to the sound system. Live mariachi on the guacamole tour is paid separately at 300 pesos per song.

Which of these tours fits you

First time in Mexico City, with Frida Kahlo on the list: take the premium small group, 6-7 hours, from $56, 4.9 ★ (1352 reviews). The van holds a maximum of 15 travellers, pick-up and drop-off are at your hotel, and the Frida Kahlo Museum entrance is included when that option is selected.

A full free day and the lowest entry price point to the 9-hour tour, from $40, 4.6 ★ (8447 reviews). You meet at Miga Cafe, Liverpool 174, at 07:50 a.m. or right behind the Palace of Fine Arts, 2 Avenue Hidalgo, at 08:20 a.m., choose between La Casa Azul and Casa Kahlo, add lunch at a local restaurant if you want it, and finish at Ciudad Universitaria.

Only the boats interest you: the small-group canal tour from 1,000 pesos, 4.9 ★ (69 reviews), covers transport, an hour in the trajinera, a drink and snacks, and can be booked shared or private. You may bring your own food and drink on this one.

Groups out to celebrate have two choices. The guacamole party runs 2.5 hours, from $60, 4.9 ★ (1256 reviews), with unlimited premium drinks and a guacamole contest, and it meets under the arches at Embarcadero Las Flores Nativitas. The Barco Fiesta Tentacion is 2 hours, from $59, 4.9 ★ (2258 reviews), strictly over 18, with three stages on the boat and a bottle for the best Xochimilco-themed costume.

Early mornings and quiet water suit the sunrise kayak, 5 hours, from 480 pesos, 4.6 ★ (95 reviews). Kayak, vest, individual paddle and traveller insurance are provided, no experience is required, and on clear mornings Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl stand on the horizon. Skip it if you want to sit and be served.
