What a Xochimilco private tour includes
Private means the vehicle, the guide and the boat are yours alone, with no other travellers added. Xochimilco lies about 28 km south of central Mexico City, and from Roma Norte the docks take 75 to 90 minutes by metro and light rail or 45 to 70 minutes by car, longer on Sunday afternoons. All five tours therefore include private transport, and two of them, the 6-hour tour at $240 and the 8-hour tour at $130, list a hotel pickup.
Time on the water is shorter than most people picture. Both the $240 and the $130 tour state one hour on the trajinera; the 6 to 8 hour tour at 2,599 pesos offers a private boat or a kayak on the option that includes it. The remaining hours go to Coyoacan, to a museum, and on two of these tours to the central library at UNAM, which sits between the canals and the city centre.
Museum entry is the part that decides a lot of itineraries. The Frida Kahlo Museum sells no tickets at the door: admission is timed, bought in advance with a calendar date and a 15-minute arrival slot, slots running 11:00 to 17:00, and the museum is closed on Mondays. The $240 tour includes those tickets subject to ticket stock, the 7-hour tour at 2,475 pesos includes them only if you select the museum option, and the 2,599-peso tour covers Casa Kahlo and, on one option, the Anahuacalli museum instead.
Start times matter because the canals have no lighting, so boats generally run from about 8:00 to 17:00 even where the embarcaderos stay open later. Put the water in the first half of the day if the tour lets you choose the order. The 10-hour Teotihuacan and Xochimilco tour is explicitly recommended to begin at 7 a.m., and at that length you will be out until early evening.
Which private tour fits you
Two or three people with one free day and a limit on spending: the 8-hour tour at $130, 4.9 ★ (65 reviews), covers the canals, UNAM and Coyoacan with private transport, an air-conditioned vehicle, a one-hour boat ride and coffee or tea. No meals are included, so plan to eat in Coyoacan.
If the Frida Kahlo Museum is the reason for the trip, take the 6-hour tour at $240, 4.8 ★ (354 reviews). It lists the museum tickets as an inclusion, along with hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water, a private guide and the one-hour trajinera, and it adds the Anahuacalli museum and the UNAM library. Access depends on ticket stock, so choose your date early.
Groups that want the day loose rather than scheduled do better on the 7-hour tour at 2,475 pesos, 5.0 ★ (22 reviews), where the museum is an option and the inclusions stay simple: private transport, a private guide, bottled water and a Mexican snack.
One day for the pyramids and the canals points to the 10-hour private tour at 3,500 pesos, 4.9 ★ (46 reviews), with an air-conditioned vehicle, private transport and guide for the full ten hours, and the Museo Nacional de Antropologia on the way. Tips are not included and the operator recommends a 7 a.m. start.
Repeat visitors who have already been inside the Casa Azul should look at the 6 to 8 hour tour at 2,599 pesos, 4.9 ★ (10 reviews): Casa Kahlo tickets, a walking tour of historic Coyoacan, the Coyoacan market, churros or an ice pop, and either a private boat or a kayak on the canals. Casa Azul entry is excluded, and the Anahuacalli option does not run on Mondays, when that museum closes.
Families with small children usually prefer the shorter days. Six hours with hotel pickup at both ends is easier to manage than ten hours in a vehicle, and the one-hour boat ride on the $240 and $130 tours is about the span most young passengers sit still for.
Before you book
- Hotel pickup: included both ways on the 6-hour tour at $240; on the 8-hour tour at $130 it covers Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco, Reforma and Downtown, and the operator gives a meeting point for addresses outside those areas.
- The 10-hour Teotihuacan and Xochimilco tour meets outside the agreed hotel, on the Paseo de la Reforma side; an airport pickup adds $20 and overtime for the service is $30.
- Frida Kahlo Museum admission is timed and bought in advance, with a calendar date and a 15-minute arrival slot between 11:00 and 17:00, and the museum is closed on Mondays. On the $240 tour the tickets are subject to availability and ticket stock; on the 7-hour tour they come only with the museum option.
- The 2,599-peso tour includes Casa Kahlo, whose time slot depends on availability, and excludes entry to the Casa Azul; its Anahuacalli option is not available on Mondays, when that museum is closed.
- No meal is included on any of the five. You get bottled water on the $240 and 2,475-peso tours, a Mexican snack on the 2,475-peso tour, coffee or tea on the $130 tour, and churros or an ice pop on the 2,599-peso tour. Gratuities are excluded everywhere.
- Boats run with no lighting on the canals, roughly 8:00 to 17:00, so a morning or early-afternoon departure keeps the water part comfortable; board before 15:00.
- On board the rules are enforced by the operator: 18 passengers maximum per trajinera including children under four, stay seated with hands and feet inside, no moving between boats, and your own loud music equipment is not allowed, only the operator's speakers.
- Bring sun protection, a hat and a layer for the open deck, plus closed shoes for the chinampas (the hand-built farming plots along the canals) and for the cobbled streets of Coyoacan.
