In shortEvery tour on this page puts you on a trajinera, the flat-bottomed boat poled along the canals, for somewhere between one and five hours. The shortest is a 2 hour tequila and mezcal tasting with brunch, rated 5.0 ★ (337 reviews), while the 4–5 hour small-group tour adds round-trip transport from your accommodation and 2 hours on the water. Guides work in English and Spanish on the trajinera ride and on the small-group adventure tour, so neither needs any Spanish from you.

What happens on a Xochimilco boat tour
All six tours use the same vessel: a trajinera, the flat-bottomed boat painted in blocks of colour and poled through the canals of Xochimilco, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The waterways run between chinampas, farming plots built up by hand in pre-Hispanic times and still worked today. Boats move at walking pace, so the length of a tour decides how far from the dock you actually get.
Time on the water is shorter than the total duration on most of these listings, and that catches people out. The small-group tour with transport lists 1–4 hours, of which one hour is the trajinera and 2 to 3 hours are the drive there and back. The 4–5 hour small-group tour gives you 2 hours afloat and spends the rest on the round-trip transfer from your accommodation. The two party boats and the tequila and mezcal tasting are shorter overall because you reach the dock yourself.
Music is part of the standard setup rather than a surprise. The trajinera ride leans on regional Mexican music, mariachi, norteño and marimba, and the tequila and mezcal tasting runs live music on board. Two tours supply their own speaker, which matters because bringing your own sound equipment onto the canals is not allowed; only operator systems are.
The canals have no lighting, so rides run in daylight and the earlier slots are the quietest on the water. Sunday afternoons are the slowest for traffic heading south from the centre, which is worth factoring in if your tour does not include transport.
Which one fits you
First trip on the canals, and you want the ride and nothing bolted on: Trajinera ride in Xochimilco, 2.5–3 hours, from 1,299 pesos, 4.7 ★ (28 reviews). A bilingual English-Spanish guide comes with it, plus beer and tequila or beer and pulque. Transport, the Serpentarium and the Ajolotario are separate.
Two hours free and an appetite: the tequila and mezcal tasting on the canals, from 970 pesos, 5.0 ★ (337 reviews). Brunch, soft drinks, bottled water and alcoholic drinks are all included, and it holds the highest rating here with a solid review count behind it.
No car and no wish to work out the route south: the small-group canal trip with transport, from 1,000 pesos, 4.9 ★ (69 reviews), which includes transport, snacks, a drink and one hour in a trajinera. If you would rather be collected at your accommodation and spend longer on the water, take the 4–5 hour small-group canal tour, from 1,800 pesos, 4.9 ★ (28 reviews), with a Spanish or English on-site guide and 2 hours afloat; food and drinks are not included, so eat before or bring something.
Birthday, stag or hen, or a group that came for the music: the guacamole party boat, 2.5 hours, from $60, 4.9 ★ (1256 reviews). The guacamole contest, unlimited beer, tequila and mezcal, fruit, mixers, sunscreen and a first-aid kit are all on board, and bathroom stops are built into the route.
Adults-only party with food attached: Barco Fiesta Tentacion, 2 hours, from $59, 4.9 ★ (2258 reviews), the most reviewed Xochimilco boat tour on this page. Crispy tacos, unlimited beer, tequila, micheladas, margaritas, soft drinks and water are included, there are three stages on the boat, and the operator restricts it to over-18s.
Travelling with young children or anyone who wants a calm couple of hours: skip both party boats and take the trajinera ride or the tequila and mezcal tasting, and choose a morning slot.
Before you book
- Trajinera ride in Xochimilco meets at the Trajineras Xochimilco Elizú Fernando service centre, next to the Abarrotes León store, with Elizú Fernando as the manager on site.
- The tequila and mezcal tasting meets at Canal 237, San Jerónimo, Xochimilco, with check-in 15 minutes before the start; the operator asks ride-hail passengers to set MEZCALICIOUS.MX as the destination.
- The guacamole party meets under the arches marked Embarcadero Las Flores Nativitas, also reached via Canal 237, San Jerónimo, 16420; transport to the meeting point is not included and the operator will help arrange it if you ask.
- Carry small notes for tips, extra food, souvenirs or a mariachi song on the guacamole party: the operator states there are no ATMs in the area.
- Transport is included on two of the six: the small-group trip (transport plus one hour on the trajinera) and the 4–5 hour small-group tour (round-trip transfer from your accommodation). On the Trajinera ride it costs 500 pesos per extra person round trip, and entry to the Serpentarium and the Ajolotario is 120 pesos per person each.
- Guide language is stated as bilingual English-Spanish on the Trajinera ride and Spanish or English on the 4–5 hour small-group tour; the tequila and mezcal tasting lists an expert guide covering the history and legends of the canals.
- Shade on a trajinera is limited to the painted roof and the sides are open, so bring a hat, sunglasses and a layer for the breeze. The guacamole party supplies sunscreen, hand sanitiser, bottled water, a cooler, utensils and a first-aid kit.
- Toilets on the canals are used only at authorised stops; the guacamole party builds bathroom stops into the route, the shorter rides do not advertise them.
- The Barco Fiesta Tentacion is 18 and over, with music and alcohol throughout, and the operator does not recommend it for older adults.
- Food is included on the tequila and mezcal tasting (brunch), the party boat (crispy tacos) and the guacamole party (fruit and guacamole ingredients). The 4–5 hour small-group tour and the Trajinera ride leave meals out, and tips are excluded on most of these listings.
